UNUM Provident Benefits Denied
Have you had your UNUM Provident benefits denied? Unum Provident has faced numerous lawsuits for failing to pay policyholders' benefits. The company is facing investigations focused on the denial of claims throughout the United States. It has been noted that Unum Provident's claims process allegedly targets long-term disability policies for cancellation. Because many policyholders have had UNUM Provident benefits denied, numerous lawsuits were filed against it. On November 19, 2004, UNUM Provident announced settlement for many of these lawsuits after a multi-state examination was conducted. The primary components of the settlement agreement include a reassessment of certain previously denied or closed claims, enhancements to the insurance company's claims handling procedures, payment of a fine in the amount of $15 million to be allocated among the states and jurisdictions that join the agreement, and additional corporate and board governance to support the oversight of the reassessment process and general claims handling practices. A principal feature of the UNUM Provident settlement is the reassessment process. Under the settlement, UNUM Provident is offering to reassess any individual or group long-term disability claim that had UNUM Provident benefits denied or closed. If you applied for disability benefits from Unum Provident or one of its subsidiaries between 1997 and 2004, and your claim was denied, you very well may be entitled to benefits.
